Notes: Christmas '06 gift for Kor. Ending spoilers for Death Note. Crossover fic with The Sandman, but you don't really need to know that series. Prompts (the ones in the parentheses) come from 52flavour's first themeset. Personally, Despair is my favorite.

Seven Encounters

(To the last syllable of recorded time)
I. Destiny
There is a page in Destiny's book about Yagami Light. It is not a particularly interesting page; a little bit of Hitler, a little bit of Nero, and Macbeth if he existed, but nothing really original.

Destiny doesn't need to know everything to figure out how things will end, he just has to read the previous pages. But Destiny knows everything, and Destiny is blind, and in his hands is the universe, so he just turns the page for Yagami Light.

(Dreams of the impossible)
II. Dream
"Did Adam and Eve dream about apples?"

"I don't remember. You may want to see the unabridged Genesis, though. The Fall Of Man is quite an interesting story."

"Right. I'd ask Eve, but then she'd say something like she's not that Eve, and nobody really said that there was an apple."

"Then perhaps she is right."

"So whaddya think?"

"Hmm?"

"Yagami Light. Kid who sometimes dreams about apples."

Lucien pushes his spectacles up the bridge of his crooked nose. "He reminds me of someone." Someone spiralling down so surely that he is beyond redemption.

"Who?" Matthew asks.

"Oh, nobody you'd care about." It is a lie. Lucien has never been fond of gossip--especially if it involved His Lordship.

(Everything you ever wished for)
III. Desire
It is not so hard to get Yagami Light to want so badly. In fact, it takes so little effort that Desire is almost disappointed.

Power is like a drug; the more of it you get, the more of it you crave.

Yagami Light wants so much that he blazes, and Desire knows that a fire that big will burn out fast.

(Eyes meeting over the noise)
IV. Destruction

Destruction is in Japan. He is contemplating getting a new pet--a fish, perhaps. Delirium liked fish.

As he sets out to buy fishing gear, he passes by a young man with brown hair and calculating eyes. Destruction watches him go and thinks, You see, I am not needed. I no longer perform the function I once served, but that man has destruction inside him.

(The currency of hope)
V. Despair

"Takada Kiyomi has died..."

It is only for a second, but Light thinks he sees a gray figure reflected in Near's eyes.

(As long as you're mine)
VI. Delirium

Yagami Light is a bad man, she thinks, or thinks she thinks. Or maybe that's just the rainbows talking in her head again. She can't really tell.

Delirium doesn't like Yagami Light. She doesn't like the way he treats that pretty blonde girl who loves him and loves him, or the way he keeps sending people to their eldest sister. The doggie doesn't like him either.

"You're worse than green mouse and telephone ice cream," she tells him, and the butterflies explode from her fingertips.

(The only adventure)
VII. Death

Thirty-eight--thirty-nine--forty.

Someone's shadow is cast over him. He tries to look up--learns that he can indeed look up, and proceeds to get on his feet.

"I'm alive," he realizes, the edges of his laughter cracked with hysteria.

"No, honey," he hears a clear female voice say. He blinks, registers the presence before him. She is very beautiful; had Light been capable at that point, he might have fallen in love.

She gestures downwards, and his gaze falls to a heart attack victim who looks exactly like him. Which means--

"Ryuk told me I can't go to heaven or hell." This is a question.

"You're going to neither."

"Because they don't exist, right?"

Her smile is full of secrets. He doesn't like that. He doesn't like her.

"Come on," she says.

"Where?"

"You'll see." And she reaches out her hand.

He doesn't take it, but he follows when she walks. He'll see.
