Night Scare
Law stared straight ahead as he drifted into the right lane. The ticking of the turn signal was the only thing that filled the silent car. He didn't know where he was going. He didn't know he was going at all. He was just going. A black car flew past him. His fingers gripped the steering wheel. He's heartbeat fast inside of his chest. If only he knew where he was going.
Another car passed him. This time, a yellow one.
The another car, and another car, and another car.
A lot of people seemed to be out that night. Was it possible they had places to go? Were they getting off work? Were they going to work? He didn't know. He didn't even know why he was out driving so late when he should have been back home with his wife, sleeping. They were expecting their first child soon. Maybe that was why he was out driving like this.
Maybe he was just worried. His wife, Neo Lyn, was a high risk pregnancy. So far everything had been going fine. But the close they got to her due date, the more he worried about her. Was she going to be fine? Was their baby going to be fine? Was he going to be fine?
So many questions had ran through his mind when he learned they were expecting a child. He had no clue if he was going to be a good dad. He had no idea how to be a good dad. Or he didn't think he did. His own parents were dead after all. And he only remembers small things that his own dad did before he was murdered by the Navy and the government.
His hands gripped tighter onto the wheel. Anger burned inside of him. They were pirates. And they were bringing a child into the world that killed children that belonged to pirates. They didn't plan this. They had actually decided not to have kids. But a mistake lead to this happening. Both had forgotten the condom during an intense, unplanned, sexual encounter. He was stupid. He didn't even think about checking the condom after they had sex. And Neo Lyn had gotten pregnant. She's been so worried about it. With no family to love her, she had no idea how one worked. But he and the crew had slowly gained her trust. She was starting to learn what a family was.
Tap, tap.
Law narrowed his eyebrows to the small sound he heard. Or he thought he heard. It was so soft, he thought he had dreamed it.
Tap, tap.
"Law! Law! Stop!"
Law strained to hear the voice. Who was it? Someone was talking to him. But he didn't know who. He looked to his left. Another car was driving right beside him. A blue one this time. A blue one with sad, scared eyes. Eyes that looked very familiar to him. Eyes that belonged to someone he protected.
"Law! Pull over! You have to wake up!" The blue eyes pleaded with them. "Please, Law!"
Suddenly, Law slammed on the brakes. His heart pounded insanely hard in his chest and head. He looked around. Cold sweat breaking out on his skin as he realized where he was and what he was doing. He hastily unbuckled himself and threw the car door open.
"Law!" Neo Lyn cried. She threw herself into his open arms. Her tears streaking down her face. "What were you doing?! Why did you…I can't believe…Law!"
"I'm sorry, Neo," Law said. He tightened his arms around her, feeling her baby bump against his own stomach. "I'm so sorry. I have no idea what I'm doing out here."
"You just got up out of bed suddenly!" Neo Lyn pulled back from him and looked up at him. "I thought you were just going to the bathroom or something! But then you headed downstairs and got into the car! I called to you but you didn't answer! I was so scared!"
"I'm sorry," Law said. "I'm so sorry. I know we've both been tense about the baby, but I never thought I'd go driving in my sleep."
