The lies we tell ourselves

Disclaimer: I don't own any of these characters but they own my emotions. These stories are the effects of my post-Thor: The Dark World viewing. Enjoy and do let me know what you think.

Loki has never known his brother to lie. Deception was usually his specialty. Thor was nothing if not straightforward. But he had lied this time, withheld information about his plans. Loki was impressed but also curious. What else had Thor lied about to him?

All his cold words and assertions that he no longer sustained the hope that Loki was his brother, was it possible that these had been lies as well? Or had Thor been telling what he believed to be the truth because his mind remained blind to what his heart had always known?

"Always perceptive of everyone but yourself."

Frigga's last words to him echoed in Loki's mind.

And so, if only to respect her wishes and do justice to her wisdom, he considered his own feelings. She was right, she always had been, even though he was loathe to admit it, especially when all his faults and deficiencies were so starkly highlighted. But he had had ample time for self-reflection whether or not he welcomed such thoughts. And whenever he had looked deep inside himself, he caught brief glimpses of what was left of his tarnished heart, the specter of who he had once been. He could not deny it. He could try to shield his eyes from the truth his mother had always seen.

For in the remnants of his lost soul, the secret caverns of the heart whose very existence he denied, there remained a persistent flicker of light that bore Thor's face.
