In the beginning of Equis, there was a mighty race of beings called Alicorns. They made home in a land they called Alicandria. All of the races of the world looked at this mighty race with awe or fear of their might. These powerful beings ruled over their land peacefully, but if the need arose, they would use the awesome power they had to smite any threat. But that rarely occurred.
For many millennia, the alicorn kind stayed in power. But suddenly, they vanished. Or most did. The races of ponies, living in the surrounding continent, looked to the mighty alicorns for guidance and leadership, fell to squabbling and divided into their three, separate races.
The Earth ponies. The hard workers of the land. They produced food for all three races and had no wings or magic, but they had their tremendous strength and expert green hooves.
The Pegasi. This prideful race were flying ponies. They were strong and fast, and provided protection for the two grounded races. They also controlled the weather systems over the surface.
The Unicorns. Wielders of a great magic. They used their natural abilities to gain wealth, and used their talent to raise and lower the Sun and Moon each day.
Each race relied on the others, but each tribe themselves the most important group. The fighting that happened between them brought them into a harsh winters caused by Windigos. Evil winter spirits attracted to chaos and disharmony. Their homeland became uninhabitable, so the quest for new lands was launched by all.
Their conquests brought them to the same new lands, and unknowingly, they found the ancient lands of the alicorn. Each tribe wanted the land for their own, and the infighting continued. The unbearable winters weather, caused by the Windigos, was brought upon them when they bickered and argued. Friendships were forged between the three races in order to push the desolate snows and wind away. The three races agreed to settle their differences and settle the land they called Equestria.
Two members from the thought to be extinct Alicorn race, became the rulers over this new kingdom. Princesses Celestia and Luna. The sisters, thought themselves the only ones left. But that, was all going to change.
