Drift Away

---

She looked up from her wheelchair and squinted at the path in front of her, barely able to differentiate between the green of the grass and the gray of the pavement.

Sakura Kinomoto felt her wheelchair move an inch and come to a stop. She scooted further into her chair. A hand reached to lift her blanket back up to her. Sakura twisted her worn face up and smiled a small thank you. The white capped nurse smiled sweetly down and asked the same question she asks everyday. "Would you like me to wheel you up the hill?" Sakura made a small gesture, signaling her will to go up.

Once again, the wheel chair lurched forward. Sakura Kinomoto, patient at Tomoeda Hospital. Age, 72. Condition, near blind, handicapped below the torso, and has a tumor in her brain ready to shut her down any moment in her life. After an eventful life, her age had finally caught up to her and she has lost practically everything. Even when she was a child, she was the clumsy and slow one with question marks floating above her head. Though she is quite elderly, she's still slow. Most of her friends and family were one step ahead of her.

"We're here," said the nurse monotonously. Sakura snapped out of her daydream. A cool breeze kissed her weary and wrinkled face and ran through her grayed hair. Only hints of the once bright auburn hair remained. The back grounds of the hospital were almost empty, except for four kids playing in the sandbox.

A static voice disturbed her moment. The nurse pulled out a walk-talky, excused herself and walked away. All of a sudden, as if there's a nurse magnet, all the nurses in the vicinity ran back into the hospital. Sakura was left alone, but no matter. She raised her head and smiled into the sun. Her mind backtracked years and decades ago.

Her lips moved at the foreign string of syllables she hadn't said out loud in years. "Tomoyo… Eriol… Yukito… Touya…"

Suddenly, she felt something cold and moist land in her hands. Try as she might, she couldn't tell what it was with her eyes. Her gnarled fingers stroked the strange object and her brows furrowed in confusion. It was small, velvety soft, and, well, wet. Hands shaking from age she brought it up to her face for a sniff. Her blank eyes snapped open in recognition.

A cherry blossom.

Memories flooded into her mind at once. Like a photograph book, she flipped through pages and pages of snapshots. A tear slid down her cheek. "What happened," she murmured quietly, "Everybody left me. All I have left are memories," her eyes darkened, " It's not fair. Why did everyone have to go and leave sooner than me?" There were happy times: Tomoyo forcing her to wear her dresses, Eriol helping her with chores, Yukito and Touya walking or, well, riding her to school… They all ended up leaving sooner than she did. And more over, he left.

Syaoran Li.

He left the earliest of them all. Right after Sakura Kinomoto became Sakura Li, he died in some freak accident that even his martial arts skills couldn't prevent. It was a tragedy. But Sakura was loyal to her husband through it all and refused to marry another or have a child.

"Syaoran…" she whispered, "How I want to see you, to touch your face, to sniff your shoulder." Sakura sighed and leaned back in her wheelchair. She closed her eyes and let her hands go loose. Her muscles relaxed and the cherry blossom floated down the hill and away.

"I'm catching up… Syaoran."

It's short but I hope that wasn't too confusing of a chapter. I haven't written in a while so tips are much appreciated. Thanks for reading.
