Harry Potter
and the Kingdom of Jade
Prologue
The Dark Kingdom of Jade
For centuries, exotic China has defied the incursions of the foreign wizards. Many are wary of China's exoticism, and baffled by its alien customs and conventions. While some speak in reverence of great mysteries of the East, most would scoff at that absurd notion. To the almighty wizards, this country held a backwater realm of crude magic and untamed sorcery, of hedge wizards and charlatans, of barbaric rites and bloody rituals. Shrouded in an ambience of decay and gloom from over-population, and an abundance of slums, it was a dangerous place. In this world of strange magic and foreign rules, even powerful wizards could face a very real threat of death without reprieve. It was quite likely for one to turn a street corner and simply vanish, without a trace. Thus, to the Wizarding World, China's magical domain was taboo. It was an uncivilized land filled with monstrosities, restless spirits, and uncouth magicians. They called it the Utter East – a disdainful reference to a society as decadent and as far removed from civilization as possible.
They were wrong.
The few foreign wizards who dared make their dwellings in this forbidden realm whispered of spirit benders and devil worshippers. Weaving frightening tales of men and women with seemingly absolute mastery over the esoteric arts, they speak of the wu - the Chinese sorcerers. These were beings who commanded spirits of heaven and earth, pealed secrets from the souls of the dead, and channeled the celestial essence of the Bodhisattvas or the wicked quintessence of the Yama Kings. The wu are the undisputed rulers of China's magical world. While the ignorant outsiders proclaimed this world as the uncivilized Utter East, China's magical community knew it as the Dark Kingdom of Jade, a society stippled in an elaborate culture, and one that prided itself for its ancient traditions and strict adherence to propriety.
Central to the entire Kingdom of Jade was the Forbidden City, a vast magical metropolis that housed the Butterfly Court and the royal descendants of the August Personage of Jade. This was where the monarchy held daily sessions of courtly rituals with its mandarins and ministers. Here, the Jade Princess, current regent of the kingdom, proclaimed sovereignty over her dominion. Seated in her throne carved from thousand-year-old jade, mined from the frozen Mountains of Tianshan, the Jade Princess meted out rewards to those who have pleased her or performed her service and deadly punishments to unworthy subjects who dared incur her wrath.
