Twas Two Nights Before Christmas

by Swellison

"Y'know I have to go." John, bundled in his winter coat, stopped at the door. "It's a demon....maybe THE demon, Bobby."

"It's the twenty-third."

"Sammy hates Christmas, anyway," John muttered.

"And whose fault is that?"

"I just---"

"Belt up!" Bobby snapped, having had his fill of Winchester's excuses. He calmed down, belatedly remembering that fourteen-year-old Dean was an expert at eavesdropping, and it wasn't even midnight yet. "Do what you've gotta do, John. I'll keep the boys safe till you return."

Their eyes met in reluctant understanding. "I know," John said, opening the door and vanishing into the night.

A/N: "Belt up!" is slang for "shut up" or "be quiet." I remember hearing my dad use it as a kid, and it sounded like Bobby-words to me. The online slang dictionary says it originated in the UK in the late '30s, but I grew up in the Midwest, so words travel fast, huh? Even back before the internet. I'm curious, did you recognize the phrase "belt up"?

So, what do you think? I'm hoping this doesn't come across as John-bashing, because that's not what I was going for, just a realistic Winchester Christmas, a year or two after Sammy found out about the family business.
