The Secret

Alone in the darkness I hear their scorn:
Those from before and those yet unborn.
'No matter the evils you faced', their voices say.
'No matter the consequences of inaction', their voices say.
I hear them always.

Alone in the darkness I know their hate:
Those who have gone, and those who yet wait.
'In the name of sanity?' their faces ask.
'In the name of peace?' their faces ask.
I know all their masks.

Alone in the darkness, I endure their ire:
Those in the forge and those on the pyre.
'We couldn't have done it', their consciences cry.
'We didn't do it', their minds deny.
I endure their lies.
