Nothing could threaten our uncontrollable giggles as the bag of flour fell onto the head of the Peacekeeper.
"I say that's the best ne yet," I said as soon as we were a safe distance away. I couldn't help but note the slight smile I had caught on our victim's face as he wiped the powder from his eyes. They were finally starting to accustom to our pranks.
We started in primary school with an eraser over the door. Our teachers were furious, at first, and we were in more trouble in just a few days than others, their entire lives. After some time, everyone began to laugh at them. I heard one teacher speak of how the district could use a little fun that the Hunger Games sucked out.
"And here, dear followers, is where it all began" I stated, gesturing to the school as if I was giving an interview to send all over Panem.
Mally laughed before following suit, "we don't try, really. It just comes naturally."
As she spoke, we turned into our classroom, said to be appropriate for "our kind". The ceiling had more than a few holes, the windows never closed, and the door was almost off its hinges. Not to mention the severe lack of materials. The nicest thing in the room was the large "HIstory of Panem- The Great Journey to Peace" text on a chipped table at the back.
I moved to my seat and glanced around the room, thinking of our next joke. I continued this thought process until the teacher stepped in and awaited silence.
"I'm sure some of you have already heard," she began. "but it seems the Reaping Day has been rescheduled this year" I felt my stomach drop. This was the first time the Reaping had ever changed date. "It will only be a couple of weeks earlier and the age cut-off shall remain in place, as the Gamemakers expect to continue next year as usual."
The class broke out into nervous chatter and the teacher stated the temporary Reaping Day as the next week, two weeks early, one week before my twelfth birthday. I just barely made the cut; lucky me.
Thankfully, I had not time for self pity. School was demanding, and there was work to be done after. I rushed around for a few days, unaware of time inching forward until my head hit the pillow and sleep evaded me each night.
Mally greeted me the next morning with a grim expression. The whole town seemed down. It was suffocating. Without responding to her, a grin slipped onto my face, "Mally, we are going to pull the best prank ever."
So, after seeing the Hunger Games movie twice (and a third time in a couple days) and beginning to re-read the book, I decided to write a spur-of-the-moment fanfiction. I barely know where I'm going with this, but I have more of a plot than my other one did at this point, so I'm off to a decent start~
