An old Ozai poem I forgot to post. For a month in season one, Ozai thought Zuko was dead, blown up on the ship. What did he think of that?
Insanity
The letter came, as all letters do
So I was not prepared for the awful news
No famine had struck the land
No battle did my army lose
Instead, a young boy had been killed
He was an exile and a disgrace
He had been too weak to fight
And so had lost his place
It is no consequence to the people
And therefore, no concern to me
So I crumple up the letter
And move on to the next decree
My expression never changed
Perhaps this was all for the best
Yet, I excuse myself for the night
I feel the need to take some rest
And now alone, I reread the letter
And a tear falls down my eye
"Oh Zuko, my son Zuko,
Why did you have to die?
No one had the right to kill you
Your life was my mine to give or take
Your blood was mine to spill
Your body was not theirs to break
You belonged to me, I gave you life
I banished you upon my whim
I made you suffer beyond reason
I gave you odds so very slim
Perhaps I was too hard on you
But it stripped weakness from your heart
Just when I had taught you to endure anything
My hopes were torn apart
My son, in life, you did displease me
But in death, I'll make it right
I will destroy everyone in my path
And in your name, I will fight"
Another's note: Insanity is really ugly, no? Insane twisted love is worse. Tell me if you agree with my interpretation of Ozai. I'm curious to your reaction.
