By Moonlight

The moonlight wasn't silver as it was often described. No, it was merely a soft glow that fell upon the land. There was no color to it, just dim light to keep the darkness at bay.

As she moved, the moonlight danced across her skin as though it were a living thing, covering her, wrapping her up in its blanket of light. She was aglow with it, her body soaking the gentle beams in, and they breathed, enlivened under her skin. It made her feel alive, she had told him before, and he could see why. He was certain it was only an illusion, but her body seemed to hum with power the moon gave her.

It almost looked as though she would throw her head back and howl. She didn't. It wasn't in her nature to let herself loose, though he could see there was a part of her that longed for that freedom. But her eyes did close as she laid her head back slowly and let the moon touch upon her face. Her body eased as every ounce of tension seemed to drift away, leaving just a girl, a young lady in her prime, standing in the middle of a field with only the full moon and a pair of red eyes to bear witness to her transformation.

The moon was at its brightest and so was she.

"The moon can't stay full forever, Hiei."

She gazed wistfully down at her fingertips, taken with the glow of the night as it played across them. It never touched him that way. He remained stubbornly shadowed, catching only the smallest trace of brilliance.

"Soon, it'll wane," she paused meaningfully, "fade and grow cold…"

A living, breathing thing, sliding across, wrapping itself around her….

"It won't happen."

She let her hand drop to her side and looked his way. Her eyes were kind and unguarded on nights such as these. Here and now, they were peaceful, but unlike ever before, tinged with regret and dejection. No uncertainty.

"It will. It's how it has always happened, always will happen. …Will you still come back when it is in its last day, about to disappear?"

She knelt in front of him, letting the moon keep her. He stayed in the shade of his tree. He felt trapped; he wanted to leave and more than that, he wanted to look away. He did neither.

"Hn. I'll be here."

His tautness diminished until it altogether disappeared when she wound a hand around and cupped the back of his neck. Her eyes were as soft as he had ever seen them as she slipped into his shadows and brushed his lips with her own.

"You're a bad liar, Hiei."
