Sam watched as Dean floated nearby; the tension lines were finally beginning to fade from his face.
The lake was warm, the result of a long, hot day. Seeing Dean relaxing was enough for Sam, he knew Dean had needed some down time. They floated in the water for what seemed like hours, nothing but the sound of lapping water and crickets filling the air.
They watched the sunset overhead, the sky so brilliant in color that as they continued to float in the watery reflection, Sam could imagine that they were falling into the sky.
Dean said nothing when Sam motioned towards the car; he just rolled onto his stomach and swam a clean line for the shore. Their silence continued as they sat on the trunk of the car, staring up at the fading sky, a blanket wrapped around each of them and a cold beer in their hand. In their life, things like a day off were nearly unheard of…nearly.
Sam watched as a stray blue heron flew over the lake, heading to roost in the fading light. If days off were few and far between; a dip in a serene lake could count as a miracle.
