His hair is slicked back; every jet-black strand right where it belongs, and his eyes are sharp and glinting and almost regretful when he looks at her.

She's supposed to be the strong one, the one who's always there to comfort people but never needs the favor returned. But as she looks around and sees the cement crumble and fall, she feels like her world is falling apart. There is no one around to lean on, now that she needs them. As her legs quiver, she struggles to stay upright.

She doesn't want to run, she doesn't want to leave, doesn't want him to die a silly, useless death. She's finally found out just what it is that leaves the other girls dreamy-eyed and giddy after simple words, and it's a tragedy it will be lost so soon. It's a tide of emotion, it's so much more than anything she's felt for a long time and she trembles under the intensity.

He gives her one last smile, and he goes out with a bang, disappearing into red and orange.

Criminal or not, he smiles like a martyr.

And she thinks it shouldn't have to end like this. Because now she knows with a horrible and creeping certainty that she is in love, and now her beloved is past-tense.
