Miles leaned back in his chair and rested both hands on his stomach, content to let Iris clear the table. The gentlemanly thing would be to do it himself – she had prepared the meal, after all – but it was largely her fault that he currently didn't feel like moving. She was a superbly talented cook, skilled in all the culinary arts. More than once, he had been tempted to abandon his table manners entirely and lick his plate clean. She was generous with her portions, too… and it was starting to show. Or at least, it was showing on him. He had gained a slight but noticeable belly since they'd got married, while Iris remained as slender as ever.
"I hope you left room for dessert," Iris called from the kitchen.
Miles massaged his tummy and sat up a little straighter. He had an idea what it would be – she'd been baking that afternoon, filling the house with delicious smells that made his stomach growl in anticipation. Iris entered the dining room, set a plate in front of him and one at her own seat, then returned to the kitchen. He'd guessed correctly – his plate bore a slice of warm apple pie and a generous dollop of vanilla ice-cream. Iris came back with the tea service and set it down carefully in the middle of the table. Miles picked up his fork and broke off a chunk of pie, scooping up some ice-cream with it. He closed his eyes, savouring the soft pastry, the cool vanilla ice cream complementing the warm apple filling perfectly.
"Good?"
Miles opened his eyes.
"Exquisite, as always."
Iris ducked her head shyly and poured him a cup of tea. Miles reached for her hand and tugged her into his lap. She giggled in delight and wrapped her arms around his shoulders.
"You feed me too well, my dear," he murmured against her. It was a token protest only. He'd been a little alarmed when he'd first noticed his growing waistline, but Iris didn't mind the extra padding around his middle. And after a while, Miles found that he didn't mind either.
Iris tipped his chin up and pushed his bangs out of his face. Miles hummed low in his throat as she kissed him.
"I love you."
"I love you too." Iris patted his tummy before getting up. "Finish your pie before it gets cold."
