This series is dedicated to Alanna B (WhoLady11_TW) because without her, I wouldn't even think of writting this.

What If…?

Chapter One

The Doctor stood beside the console and looked at nothing in particular. He raised his hand to look at it and saw the faint glow that marked the start of his regeneration emit from it. Tears filled his eyes as he lowered his hand and looked up to one of the TARDIS walls.

"I don't want to go." he said as the glow began to strengthen. Soon, the light shone brighter than a sun and he closed his eyes, stretching his arms out to his sides.

The energy burst from him and destroyed a section of the TARDIS wall. The pain this must be causing the TARDIS filled the Doctor with more sorrow than before. Bit by bit, his precious machine was being destroyed.

His healing had been completed; all that remained now was for him to change. To become a different man. He closed his eyes in preparation for this change.

It was at this point the TARDIS gave a weak groan and opened itself to reveal its heart. The Doctor's eyes snapped open and, wasting no time, he poured the remainder of his regeneration energy into the heart of his TARDIS.

The Doctor fell to the floor on his hands and knees, gasping for breath. He looked at his hands and felt his hair. He had survived. His most faithful companion had saved him from going through a change his hearts couldn't take.

The TARDIS jerked and he remembered that he was crashing. He stood and fiddled with several buttons, knobs and levers before clinging to the console tight.

"Allons-y! Ha!" he proclaimed as his TARDIS fell apart around him.
