Chapter One - Disturbing Dreams
So Unstable.
Carey laid on his bed, listening to "Unstable" by Adeema, one of his favorite rock bands. His bed shook gently - the big tour bus was making its way down the highway, on the way to the next stop, the next gig.
There was a knock on the door.
"Come in," he called.
He heard the door slid into its slot in the wall and someone came in. He sat up, bumped his head on the wall, and looked down and saw Fi. She was looking up at him.
"Hey," he said.
"Hey."
"Did you want anything?"
"No, not really. Jack's asleep in the common room, and Mom and Irene are discussing business, plus my laptop's down, so I thought I'd come to see you."
Carey put on a sad, abandoned puppy expression. "Your laptop has to stop working before you want to come see me? Gee, thanks."
Fi grinned.
Carey motioned for her to join him on the top bunk. "Come on up here. I don't feel like getting down."
Rolling her eyes, Fi climbed the ladder and crawled next to Carey. She got comfortable and listened to the radio, which was now playing Linkin Park's "Hit the Floor". Carey put an arm around her and they lay there. Soon they both drifted off to sleep, their breathing becoming regular, becoming one.
Carey and Fi were walking down a dark alley - a shortcut to get to wherever they were going. The dim lights shone down on them, giving them a slightly creepy appearance. Carey was aware of them talking. He couldn't tell what - he couldn't register his own voice, nor Fi's. Suddenly the hairs on his arm and neck bristled and stood on end, an a shudder ran through his spine. There was a roaring behind them. They turned. Suddenly Carey was thrown backwards by an invisible force. He landed hard on his back, struggling to breathe, but he couldn't. The wind was knocked out of him. Fi kneeled next to him and helped him to his feet. Suddenly air, beautiful, sacred air filled his lungs, but he had no time to enjoy it. From the dark, long, writhing vines protruded from the darkness, long, sharp thorns covering it. They wrapped themselves around Carey's torso, the thorns breaking his skin.
"CAREY!" Fi's voice called out, frantic, frightened.
Suddenly, from somewhere up front, Ned slammed on the brakes. The bus jarred to a stop, and Carey and Fi were jolted awake. Cold sweat poured down Carey's face, and a cold shiver coursed through him.
Just a nightmare, he thought. Just a nightmare.
He was wrong.
