Hail To The Chief
'How much longer until the President's arrival?' the Bay City police chief asked a Sergeant who was next to him. The two of them were waiting with several other people in front of city hall. Mayer Hollingsworth was standing nearby, nervously tapping his right hand against his pant leg. 'Five more minutes, Sir,' Sergeant Milner said to the chief after looking at his watch.
It was the first visit of the newly elected President of the United States who had been in Office for just two months. The Chief was looking over the street in front of the city building. A large crowd of people had come to see the President. They were held back on the sides of the street by barricades. A lot of them had American flags in their hands, waiting for the right moment to give them a wave. The surrounding buildings were decorated in red, white and blue, looking very festive and patriotic. 'I hope everything goes as planned,' the chief thought as he cast his blue eyes one final time over the people. As the chief of police he was responsible for the safety of the President. He looked over at the Mayor who seemed even more nervous as the seconds ticked by. It wasn't often that a President came to Bay City, the last time had been almost 40 years earlier.
The Chief heard the crowd cheering further down the road and looked in that direction. He could see several limousines slowly driving along the street. The citizens were waving their flags proudly as the cars passed them.
A short time later the limousines stopped in front of City Hall and a man in a dark suit exited the first vehicle and held the door open as a few more men in suits stepped out of the other cars. Finally the President came out of the leading limousine, waving to the cheering crowd. The people called out his name and the President made his way over to them to shake hands, his security detail close by.
Finally the President met up with the Mayor. 'Welcome to Bay City, Mr. President.' 'Thank you, Mayer Hollingsworth,' the tall man replied and the two shook hands while the photographers took pictures. Then the Mayor introduced the Deputy Mayor and other city officials. 'I believe you know the Chief of police, Mr. President?' Hollingsworth asked and the President smiled at the man the Mayor was gesturing to. 'I do indeed,' the President replied and shook the Chiefs hands. It was only a week ago when the two men saw each other while playing golf. 'Are you up for another round on the greens this afternoon, Buddy?' 'Anytime, Mr. President,' the Chief grinned at the blond President. 'Last time I just let you win because I didn't want to embarrass you. Today the gloves will come off,' Starsky laughed and both men followed the other people inside of the government building.
