Title: Sisters

Chapter 1: The beginning

Petunia Evans hated her sister Lily. She hated her red hair. Petunia had light thin blonde hair. She hated all her dirty animals and she hated all of Lily's friends.

The worst part was they had to share a bedroom. Petunia was tidy and orderly. She collected china teacups. She dusted them daily and studied the catalogues to decide the style, the color of the next teacup to add to her collection.

Lily collected animals. Her favorite was a large, orange male cat named Harry. He slept with Lily every night. Too many times Petunia had come into their bedroom to discover Harry walking through her tea cup collection. She kept it on a high shelf above her bed but he would jump up and tip toe between the precious cups and saucers. Of course he knocked one over one day. Lily apologized many times, paid for a replacement but did remind Petunia, Harry loved jumping up on the high shelf. It was like a special tree where he could sit and survey their bedroom. It was a natural thing for him to do. "Besides" she would add gently, "a living creature is more important than an old tea cup."

Petunia believed animals belonged outside. That's where they could sit in real trees. Shed their fur. Throw up fur balls. Sharpen their claws on something other than Petunia's bedspread.

It was as though Harry knew Petunia did not like him so he took revenge on her possessions.

Harry the cat was not the only animal Lily would bring into their bedroom. She was also so smart. A brilliant student. Very interested in science. Over holidays the science teacher would always let Lily bring home the science room rat, hamster or fish.

Strangely, when Lily brought these other animals home she would sit with Harry and explain to him who these animals were and warn him not to bother them. For the most part Harry left them alone. This seemed so odd to Petunia. Lily had magic way with animals.

Petunia was never a very good student. When she went to the shops to buy her teacups she had to count her coins over and over again. Numbers did not "stick" in her head. Once the clerk embarrassed her in front of other customers pointing out she was 2 shillings short. She would have to pick out a less expensive teacup this time. Petunia did not go back to that shop again.

Lately Petunia hated Lily even more because the bedroom they shared was filled with a huge packing trunk. Clothes were spread all over Lily's side of the bedroom. She was packing to go away to school. She had been accepted to go to a very special school. Hogwarts. A school for witches and wizards. Their parents were delighted. Especially their father. Of course Petunia could never tell anyone in the neighborhood that her sisters was a witch.

While packing Lily handed Petunia a notebook. "These are my Latin translations when school starts give them to Vernon Dursley. He's such a dunce. I tutored him all year with little effect. Maybe these will help him."

Petunia was happy to have an excuse to talk with Vernon. She found him very attractive.

"Will you come to the train station tomorrow to see me off?", Lily asked.

If this was something that would please Lily, Petunia would do just the opposite.

"No, I think not," but what would be her excuse? "Dad... I'll stay and keep an eye on Dad while Mum takes you to the station."

"That's a good idea," Lily said. "I'll miss Dad. I'll miss Mum and you, also" But then she turned away and continued to stuff skirts and stockings into the large trunk.

Lily and her father had always had a very special relationship. She would miss him very much.
