Warnings: There's fluffy angst galore, as well as some mild spoilers for volume six if you squint.
A/N: I based this drabble on a rough poem I wrote about two weeks ago. I chose Magdalena (or Mary Magdalene or Magdalene. I never know what to call her) and Remington because I find their relationship interesting, though we didn't get to see much of it. I had always thought that Remington harbored some sort of feelings for the prophetess before Chrono came to take her away. But perhaps that's just because I've read the series so many times that I've lost count… ^^;
All sentences are fragmented on purpose, as this is meant to be a poem. It's written in present tense because I felt like it suited the situation.
Disclaimer: I hereby disclaim all rights to these characters. They belong to Moriyama Daisuke-sensei. I just happen to enjoy playing with them.
Ewan Remington loves the prophetess Magdalena with all of his heart.
The prophetess Magdalena loves Ewan Remington, but not with all of her heart.
To him, she is the beautiful enigma: forever untouchable, yet undeniably alluring.
To her, he is the younger brother of sorts: an irreplaceable piece of her otherwise quietly dull life inside the gilded birdcage.
But it is not enough.
It is never enough.
Because she cannot love him in the way that he loves her.
Ewan lives in blissful ignorance.
Until his beloved prophetess admits to him that her heart belongs to another.
Sadly, Ewan lashes out at Magdalena in his fury.
She has lost him, he tells her. She cannot say she never saw it coming. Yet inside, her heart still breaks for him. Because though she loves him, he desires to have nothing more to do with her.
The prophetess still remembers his smile, that wonderfully playful grin, shown only to her. This is one memory she knows she will never lose, even as she can hear the subtle anger in his non-voice.
The tears that escape from Magdalena's eyelids are not for Magdalena herself. They never are. She cries for the death of a friendship she never wanted to lose. She cries for the boy who loved her. She cries for the boy who hates her. Most of all, she cries for the boy who refuses to believe her when she insists that she loves him.
Love is a fickle, fragile emotion. It possesses no wings to fly with, but it manages to find its way to her heart, even as he attempts to release it from his. It lives in her heart as she believes it dies in his.
Love is never evil, even as it brings her great pain.
Love is simultaneously wonderful and cruel, bringing the lonely prophetess joy even as it causes her heart to throb in agony. Because it means that she is still alive.
The love her heart holds for Ewan is her precious proof that she is not completely empty inside.
Love is not an emotion Magdalena wants to destroy. It is far too beautiful and sacred to deserve murder.
As much as it hurts, the prophetess knows she will live. Because her love gives her strength even as it causes her pain. Because she loves him still, even as she breaks his heart. Because she is not the one for him. She never was. She never will be. He was simply blinded by the love he felt for her.
Magdalena knows that Ewan Remington will heal with time, because she prays for it every day, with all of her remaining strength. Because she knows that soon, she will be freed from her birdcage by the one who will take her life, and after that, he will not be able to see her any longer.
A/N: As always, thank you very much for reading! Please feel free to drop a review if you have any questions/comments/constructive criticism. I may or may not be writing a sequel to this focusing more on Remington and what happens right before and after the inevitable. I'm not sure yet. I hoped that you enjoyed reading this as much as I enjoyed writing it! ^^
