I just had an idea on the way home from a softball game the other night. This is just a little prequel oneshot to Tomahawks and Briefcases.
Enjoy!
Connor peeked out from behind the entryway, seeing his mother sitting on the couch, reading a book. He curled his tiny hand around his trusty tomahawk, sneaking closer to the couch. He took a deep breath to get ready to yell and-
"Kwhe Ratonhnhaké:ton," she said, looking over her shoulder at him.
Connor pouted and crossed his arms. How did she know he was there? He made sure to be careful and quiet even! "How did you know I was here?" he whined, walking around to the front of the couch.
Ista grinned smugly. "I told you. I have eyes in the back of my head. Every adult does."
Connor rubbed the back of his head. "When will I get mine?" He wanted them so Josh wouldn't be able to sneak up on him anymore.
"When you become a man," Ista replied, folding the page in her book.
Connor pout grew as he climbed up into her lap. He suddenly started thinking as his mother ran her fingers through his hair. If all adults had eyes in the back of their heads…did that mean his father had them too? Michelle had told him it was strange that he didn't have a dad around, like everyone else.
"Ista?"
"Hm?"
"Does my father have eyes in the back of his head too?"
Ziio chuckled. "Yes, his were exceptionally strong too."
Connor rubbed the back of his head. "Will mine be like his then?"
"Perhaps."
Connor looked up at her, resting his head back against her. "Why won't you tell me about him?"
Ziio sighed, wrapping her arms around him. "Do you really want to know about him?"
The six year old nodded.
Ziio pulled him closer, bringing a hand to his hair again. "Your father was like one of those Princes in the Disney movies you, Michelle, and Josh watch."
Connor cocked his head, trying to imagine someone like that. All he could come up with was a man wearing one of those goofy capes.
"He talked very properly and he is very smart. He was a little arrogant, but he was a good man. He was also very charming and chivalrous."
"What's chivalrous?"
"It means he was a gentleman, and I expect you to be the same," she replied, tugging on a lock of his hair.
Connor tried to imagine what this man would look like without the goofy cape.
"He also was very handsome, like one of those Disney princes. I don't know why he picked me, but he did."
Connor looked up at her with an angry pout. "You're the prettiest lady in the world, why wouldn't he pick you?"
Ziio chuckled and wrapped her arms around him tighter, kissing the top of his head. "Nia:wen."
"Will I meet him someday?"
Ziio paused for a long time. She finally sighed. "Maybe when you're older."
Connor turned himself around, looking up at her. "Why? Michelle told me it was strange that I don't have a Dad. Why can't I meet him now?"
Ziio shook her head. "Don't listen to a word she says. I think we're perfect the way we are," she said with a smile.
"Really?"
"Really."
Connor thought about what she said for a long time. "Ista, I'm going to grow up and be like one of those Princes to, so you won't miss father," he said, looking determined.
Ziio smiled, holding him close. "You're my little Prince now."
Connor felt his heart swell with pride.
He was happy if Ista was happy.
