Well it's another new year and I thought I'd start it with a story that centers around new beginnings. We spent New Years at a friend's house up in the mountains by a lake and had a lovely time.

Captain Archer paused on the threshold of the room and gazed with pride and affection at the child sleeping soundly on the bed. He couldn't imagine life without the presence of his son in it. The boy may have entered the world unexpectedly, but he was the shining star in the Captain's life.
As Archer moved back into the living area, he recalled the night he was informed that he was going to be a father. He had been totally unprepared by the disclosure, at first uncertain he had heard correctly. After all, they had been told such a thing would very probably be impossible since his biochemistry wasn't compatible with his wife's. That had been two years ago, and now there was a second child on the way.
Much had been learned since then, mainly that enough of their DNA was similar in sequencing, allowing for fertilization and gestation to occur. It had baffled the doctors on both sides, the final consensus being that if such pairings happened then both parties should have a complete medical done if they were planning on having children.
Archer turned off the evening broadcast and headed for his bedroom, setting the living area lights on stand-by as he did. The house being an older Victorian model, was not equipped with automatics. That was fine by him, the location alone made it invaluable. Set on a sea-side portion of the California coast, it was similar to the one he'd grown up in and afforded his family some privacy due to it's remote distance from the city, but still allowed for an easy commute by air to and from Starfleet Headquarters.
He slowed his pace as he entered the master bedroom, treading softly across the carpet until he was standing by the bed. Archer sat on the edge and sighed as he undid his uniform before leaning down to remove his boots. Pausing a moment to collect his thoughts, he let his gaze settle on the beautiful face of his sleeping mate.
Who would have imagined that in the end, he'd marry one of the same beings he once held in such contempt. A rueful grin crossed his face as he leaned over and layed his hand gently on her gravid belly. He could feel her heart beating as well as the faint stirrings of the new life within. A girl, according to the doctors. The grin faded, a gentler expression replacing it as the love and devotion he held for this remarkable lady once again enveloped him.
As if hearing his thoughts, she stirred and opened her eyes to regard him a moment before quietly saying, "Jonathan, you aren't worrying again, are you?"
Shaking his head gently, he replied, "No luv, just considering what a lucky man I am is all."
Lifting a hand, T'Pol layed in softly against his cheek, saying, "I am sure 'luck', had nothing to do with it."
He smiled in response, taking the hand and pulling it to his lips to plant a loving kiss on it. "You're probably right. Fate and destiny must have had a hand in it as well."
She gave him a curious look before responding, "It's late. I assume you were coming to bed, were you not?"
"Yes, yes." He slid between the covers and snuggled close to his wife, whispering softly to her as he drifted to sleep, "No matter what the future brings, I'll always love you."
He almost missed her sleepy response of "As I you", before he faded out.

The End
