Tender kisses were exchanged, lips brushing, savouring the sweet taste. Tongues slipped into wet caverns, drinking the exotic flavour while they did battle for supremacy. Breathing became laboured and difficult causing the two warriors to draw back to stare deeply into each other's eyes.
So close yet so far, for they could go no further that night. Alexander would not permit himself to be befuddled on the eve of battle. Nodding in understanding, though with the regret in his heart reflecting in pale blue eyes, Hephaistion readied to depart. A strong calloused hand stilled him. Brown eyes burning with the leader's extraordinary charisma searched his face, meeting and holding his gaze. Gently, a voice thick with emotion and need sounded in his ears.
"I love you Hephaistion. There is no other who can take your place – not even my wife or any future wives."
Another searching look was given to ensure that the speaker's words were taken to heart … believed. Swallowing hard the other warrior cocked his head and smiled, concealing his minor jealously at his love's allusion to his future spouses. He only allowed the joy at hearing such a declaration to shine from his eyes.
"I love you too Alexander, Greatest Conqueror and Leader. No one can replace you in my heart. Without you I am lost … as is the Kingdom."
"I, too, am lost without thee Hephaistion."
