Happy Birthday, Near
Disclaimer: I don't own Death Note. I wish I owned Mello.
A/N: Here's a heads-up, this is a oneshot of a friendship, not a pairing. Got that? A friendship, albeit a twisted one, but a strange affinity, nevertheless.
The door of Near's room flew open, and there stood Mello, in his usual leather, hair falling over his face, covering his scar. His features were twisted in an expression of coldness, with a tinge of disgust. Near remained seated, simply watching, as Mello continued glaring at him. The standoff dragged out for a moment, when Mello violently flung down a shoddy cardboard box and stomped out without a word, slamming the door as he left.
Near picked up the odd package and opened it. Inside was an incredibly complex puzzle; it's pamphlet boasting that it was, "impossible".
It was already solved.
A note lay on top, reading "I'll beat you, one of these days."
Near thought wryly to himself,
'Happy birthday, me."
A/N: Okay, so the timeline is obviously messed up, because the Mello that I was envisioning when I wrote this was post-explosion Mello, but this takes place at the orphanage. And Near is about the age of when he caught Light/Kira. Perhaps it's an AU? Oh, and it is Near's birthday in the fic, he's not being sarcastic. Although his birthday is actually August 24, 1991… Ugh, my A/Ns are longer than the story itself. Read and review, please! All criticisms given gracefully will be accepted gratefully. And please, pile on those criticisms, so I can improve as a writer. Thanks!
