Detective Javier Esposito glanced up from the smart phone that he held in a death grip at his partner's whispered exclamation.
The sound of an explosion echoed through the small apartment.
"Beckett!"Javier called desperately into the phone even though he knew what was going on.
The worst case scenario.
The one Kate had asked him about.
The silence of the dropped call told the two homicide detectives everything in that one awful moment.
Javier swallowed hard and shared a glance with his partner who had come around to his side of the dining room table. Kevin had the same horrified look that Javier knew was mirrored on his own.
Rick Castle: Friend, partner, father, hero...
Esposito didn't want to end the list there.
They didn't know.
Until they knew Javier was putting this one in the win column.
He didn't want to consider the alternative of a lost friend...of two lost friends.
Kate and Rick had been inseparable lately.
One without the other wasn't an option
Throwing the phone in his pocket Javier shook his head at Ryan. "Don't go there."
Kevin followed his partner to the door. "They blew the bank. The odds…."
Javier whipped around. "This is Castle, bro. He won't leave his family without a fight or Beckett."
The rest of the journey to the car was in silence. Each lost in their own thoughts and prayers.
The family of the Twelfth couldn't be shattered again Javier thought bleakly as he got in the driver's side. It just couldn't.
