Beneath the Surface – Return to Normality
For the last week, Colonel Jack O'Neill and Major Samantha Carter had for once been unrestricted by rules and regulations, they're memories erased due to some weird alien mind stamp. During that time, they had become closer, and it had felt so right between them. The few spare moments they had shared alone was enough to allow him into her heart and her into his, and it had felt like the most natural thing in the world.
As the remaining members of SG1 departed through the opening that led to the Stargate, Sam and Jack were left facing each other; their hopes and dreams of being together, slowly disbanded. Realization took hold that they couldn't talk and hold each other as they did in the mines. The knowing looks and fleeting smiles of affection would be left behind along with the memories of Thera and Jonah.
"So…Colonel!" Sam said hesitantly, unable to believe that her feelings for her CO were to be put to one side again, and her heart was aching that she would have to continue to pretend that she didn't care for him.
"Major." Jack answered, trying desperately to sound casual, so as not to let her see he was hurting.
"That bald man you were trying to remember?"
"General Hammond. He's from Texas you know." Jack answered trying to erase the feelings for her that continued to resurface.
"Right."
"It's all coming back." Jack replied with a sad smile
"Yes, sir."
"Sir…" Jack replied softly.
Sam nodded sadly, at having to return to their military roles. So much had changed between them, and she didn't think it was going to be easy returning to the SGC. Jack felt as if he needed to say something to her, but he just couldn't find the words. His heart was screaming for him to tell her, that he loved her, but as usual, professional decorum had to be maintained, and he felt saddened that things may never be the same again.
"Let's go home."
"Yes, sir." Sam answered, sighing inwardly.
With a slight awkwardness, they walked together towards the Stargate, as a heavy silence fell between them. Just before they entered the gate, Sam gave a fleeting glance towards her CO, who appeared to be lost in thought. Feeling his 2IC's eyes on him, he turned towards her and said softly, "Ready?"
"Do I have a choice?"
"Well, you could stay here, lousy hours, lousy pay, lousy food! Shall I go on?"
"What's my second choice?"
"Me!" With that Jack stepped through the Stargate leaving a bewildered smiling Carter behind him.
Sam didn't know if that was the remnants of the memory stamp or if it was the Colonel speaking, but she was damned if she wasn't going to find out!
