Thoughts to the Present

Staring out at the crowd -his crowd- gathered at the bottom of the building, he grinned, remembering. The first time he had set the hat on his ruffled hair and strapped on the cape, he had been nervous as hell. Hands shaking and all that. He had also not known or thought about the responsibilities that cape brought; the mantle of a kaitou. He had set his own rules and spent countless hours creating harmless tricks to accomplish his goal. There was the key word- harmless. That had become a glaring revelation the first time the caw of a crow brought the painful kiss of a bullet and the darker aspects of his night job. If you want to get technical, the job is always dangerous, but that's different. That's the rush of evading his tanteis and his task-force. Also, he couldn't exactly count out the fact that he was throwing himself off of buildings and trusting the rather flimsy material of his hand-made collapsible hang-glider. That was pretty dangerous too. Cough.
Those minor details aside, the Poker face wasn't his only ally during his midnight escapades. Real joy broke through at the challenges of his passion because it was fun. He knew he had a goal, and it was an important one. At times like this, though, watching his audience's joy and anticipation, it was easy to forget. After all, Kuroba Kaito is a showman down to his very soul.
He looked at his watch; almost time. 3...2...1...

He dove off of the rooftop and loosed a cloud of fuchsia smoke into the crisp night air. Standing tall, his eyes swept over the masses gathered there for him and an almost genuine smile graced his features before widening into his trademark smirk.

"Ladies and Gentlemen," he called. "Welcome."
