A Girl Like No Other
Chapter 1 - Meet Cat Woods
To all the tourists milling around the Miami beach, Catherine Woods looked just like any other girl. Her dark skin and hair gave her a Cuban look as she sat alone, watching people messing about in the water.
However, looks can be deceiving.
A cheeky 16 year old, Catherine had lived with foster mother Ellie Moor for almost 15 years.
Back in 1991, a heavily pregnant Cuban woman had been helped ashore by the Cuban Rescue group. Once ashore, she was rushed to the hospital, where, an hour later, she gave birth to Catherine. She stayed just long enough to name the child, before disappearing. She gave her name as Estelle Woods - 22 years old.
This information was later given to the police, who used it in their fruitless enquires to find the child's mother. No-one came forward, and after two weeks, they gave up, shunting baby Catherine into foster care. She had been passed around for a year, before being fostered by Ellie.
Now, sitting on the sunlit beach, Catherine remembered this story that had been related to her many times, both by Ellie, and her social worker - Elena Larson.
Sighing, Catherine got up and wiped her sandy hands on her jeans. She wore simple clothes, blue jeans and a light yellow t-shirt bearing the words ' I'm not cute - And I'll shoot if you say so.' She smiled to herself, remembering how mad Ellie had got when she bought it.
"It's highly inappropriate!" Elle had spluttered when she saw it. Catherine had just given her one of her smiles, and Ellie had taken the hint, backing off. She knew that look to well. It had never been mentioned again.
As she made her way up the beach, she spotted an all to familiar face in the crowds. Groaning, Catherine quickly ducked behind several tourists, using them as a shield until she made it off the beach and into the maze of the city.
Two hours later (Her watch made it about 3:30pm) Catherine got bored and grudgingly began to make her way back to Ellie's house. The neat little house was close enough to the beach that you could walk there, but far enough away so Catherine could go there without being seen.
Evidently however, Ellie had been watching for her from the windows, because before Catherine could fish her keys from her pocket, the light blue door was flung open and an angry looking Ellie stood in the doorway. Catherine smiled inwardly before speaking.
"I'm home!"
Ellie's face seemed to strain. Eventually she spoke. Her voice was shaking with anger.
"Get inside now Catherine. We need to talk."
