He looked outside the window of the bus, the steel night sky flickering and lighting up several times with explosions.
He stared back at the city, knowing he was witnessing it's last, and undeniably darkest hour.
Layfon looked down, clenching his teeth, his fist tightening so much that he almost drew blood.
Everyone who was inside that city...
He closed his eyes, his regret starting to consume him.
He could remember what they called him in Glendan...
"Traitor!"
"Idiot!"
"We trusted you!"
"You're a monster!"
"You're so selfish!"
Layfon looked down at the floor, everything they had said from before popping back in his mind.
He felt empty...
As though he'd lost every thing, but this time, there was no denying that he had acted on this himself, much unlike the last time this happened.
Layfon threw his head harshly back against his chair, forcing everything within his mind to be put out.
He couldn't really honestly say that was effective for over a mere moment.
He had abandoned them... everyone in Zuellni...
He could just imagine it.
All of those people being eaten by the Contaminoids, torn to shreds by their giant purplish teeth, their guts spewing the entire ground around them...
"You shouldn't regret this," a voice spoke from his side, "You did your best to warn everyone."
Layfon grimaced at her tone, knowing that he would regret this.
But regardless...
"Yeah, I know Felli." He sighed with half lidded eyes.
No matter what anyone said, those words that he was called were now undeniably true.
Even her words...
"Anyone who ha the ability to fight against the Contaminoids is automatically given a duty to protect the world from them. That's the reason we have these powers in the first place!"
Layfon cursed, not her, but himself.
If only he had heeded her words...
As though she were reading his mind, Felli spoke again, her silver hair reaching to the ground even as she sat, "At the very least you saved as many of the people as you possibly could."
Layfon nodded, looking at all the people behind him.
Among them were three girls, Meishen, Mifi, and Naruki.
The later mentioned of the three was knocked out cold.
He grimaced even deeper at the thought of what he had to do to get them on...
"Felli..." Layfon looked down again, "Am I really right in trying to save them if they themselves don't want to be saved?"
She gave him no answer, his words simply hanging in the air.
Layfon looked back at the city of Zuellni.
And he could see the ultimate sign of conflict - mid air explosions - had ceased completely.
Layfon then knew that there was never any going back at that moment, not that there was to begin with.
Zuellni had fallen.
A/N: An idea I got in my mind after a while of exercising.
This story's far from over, just to say the least.
