Anne Almost Dies
3 long months I've been on this island, and no one, except for Diana, Gilbert, and Anne Cordelia Wright are here, thought Anne miserably. She felt tears forming in her gray-green eyes, and then all of a sudden, she slammed right on the ground, her vision all blurry and Diana heard it, and said, "Anne, are you all right? Anne?" Diana found that Anne was not breathing and her blood was not circulating properly, so Diana began performing a popular technique: cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
A helicopter with the logo of Children's Mercy Hospital was a few miles away when they picked up something on their radar. "Guys, I think there's somebody down there," a trained paramedic said to the pilot. He landed the helicopter right where Anne used to be standing, and she still wasn't responding to Diana. She said, with a quiver in her voice, "Anne's not breathing, Doctor. What should I do now?" The paramedic said, "Have you performed CPR?" Diana said, "Yes, I have been for the last 5 minutes." "OK, then you'll have to stand back. I've got a defibrillator here, and I have to put pads on this girl, OK?" "OK," Diana said with worry. The paramedic saw Anne's heart rate was 156 beats per minute, with a blood pressure of 134 over 96. They put pads on Anne's stomach, and when the pads were charged to 200 joules, the paramedic pushed a button, which made Anne suddenly jump, and then continued CPR for 5 minutes, and they suddenly saw Anne's heart rate drop from 156 to 65 bpm. Anne's heart went back into a normal heartbeat. Diana looked at Anne, who woke up with a tired moan, and said, "Diana, what just happened?" Diana said, "There was a paramedic here, and he said you went through cardiac arrest, and the paramedic had to use a defibrillator on you, and when he pushed a button, he said it would shock the heart into beating correctly, and he said it did develop a normal rate of 65 beats per minute, after the shock was delivered to your heart. Oh, I'm so glad you're not dead! You're only 16, with a full life ahead." "Diana, would you sacrifice your life if I was in danger?" "Indeed, I will," said Diana. Anne said, "Well, let's get back to Avonlea. I miss Green Gables." "I do too, Anne." And off they went, back to Avonlea.
