The Quick and the Dead

Visions of blood.

Of blood and concrete.

And then it had rained and washed a lot of the blood away.

Sam closed his eyes to it.

It was quick. At least there was that. Violent, but quick. The classic culmination to a hunter's life. Who wanted slow and drawn out anyway? That's what he would've gotten in hell.

Hell.

That's where Sam was now.

From the moment he'd closed his eyes, and Dean was still there.

From the moment he'd wept into his brother's jacket and pulled him into his own chest.

From the moment he'd heard the softest little moan escape Dean's lips and he'd whispered into his ear... "I'm sorry, Dean...I should've killed him...we could've...please..."

The things you say for the last time ever.

A list of regrets and pleas. Hardly constructive.

Four months. That's what that bastard had robbed him of. Four months. Sixteen weeks in which a solution to the deal could've been found. Christ, anything was possible in this world, and the Trickster had ripped that possibility from him all for a cruel twist to a false promise.

The awkward stares.

Sam closed his eyes to them.

Towns folk. The Motel manager. All standing around, dumb struck and staring at the man on the ground with the dead man in his lap.

Sam closed his eyes to them.

And then the cops. And then the coroner.

From a lumpy motel bed to a stainless steel pull out drawer in the morgue. Why Sam had agreed to the viewing, he'll never know.

Became like a game. Just endure the experience until you wake up again. Hopefully.

But there was no waking up.

This was it.

Dean was so still. So colorless. So...cold. So, not Dean.

Still, it wasn't like it wasn't expected. A year was a year and so what if fate had intervened sooner?

But it wasn't fate.

It was the Trickster.

A God. A King of Kings. Untouchable.

How could he, Sam Winchester possibly match him?

He pushed a hand forward and smoothed the spiked hair on his brother's head.

"I'm gonna get him, Dean. Gonna bring you back. That's my next job."

The screech of the drawer mechanism pierced his heart.

He turned, and closed his eyes to it.
