Prologue

She dodged another attack, her face narrowly missing direct contact with her opponent's foot. She swung again however her blade cut through nothing but air. The two lieutenants had been sparring for the past hour and neither had landed a single blow.

Zaikiko was beginning to feel it's toll, her muscles were aching just form holding the sword. Her talents lay in speed rather than endurance.

"You're getting slow in your old age Zaikiko!" Zaikiko looked over at her opponent and was disheartened to she that she hadn't even broken a sweat.

"Shall we continue? or would you like me to get you a chair, Obaasan?" Sayuri taunted.

Zaikiko grinned.

"A chair? Ha! I thought we where just warming up." She rushed towards the second squad lieutenant, her zanpaktou ready to thrust forward. Unfortunately, Sayuri was prepared and she leapt into the air kicking off Zaikiko's back before landing a few feet away. The parry left the squad eleven vice winded, causing her to stumble slightly.

"Ready to call it?" Sayuri asked, her voice frustratingly calm and collected.

"Not until you do." Zaikiko swung her sword again, this time only missing her target by a centimeter.

"Close." Sayuri smiled, then in a flash, moved directly behind Zaikiko, her own Zanpaktou at the luitenant's throat. "But not close enough."

"Ok that's enough." A second Sayuri jumped down from one of the surrounding Cherry trees. "I think it's fair to say you lost that one Obaasan." Both of the sparring shinigami relaxed. "Thank you Kitsuhana, you can rest now." At that, the Sayuri which had been fighting with Zaikiko turned into a white light, which in turn formed a short, wakazashi sword. The real Sayuri placed the blade lovingly back into its scabbard. "That wasn't bad. Keep this up and you might actually beat me." She joked.

"If I remember correctly, it was because I beat you that I started training with your Zanpaktou."

Sayuri shrugged and lay down on the floor, looking up at the whispy clouds in the otherwise clear sky.

"Remember when we used to spar for fun rather than necessity?"

"What's that Sayu? Not going all nostalgic on me are you?" Zaikiko nudged her playfully with her foot.

"No no, just a passing thought. Seems these days if it's not Hollows it's something else." Zaikiko sighed and brushed some loose strands of her steel blue hair out of her eyes.

"I suppose." There was a brief moment of silence before she added, "But then we still get days like this. I know it's not exactly time off, and they're few and far between," She smiled and extended a hand to help her friend up, "But we should make the most and enjoy them."

Sayuri took a deep breath and smiled back.

"So we should." She took Zaikiko's hand and pulled herself to her feet.

"Race you back."

Sayuri laughed.

"Ok, but don't push yourself too hard Obaasan, you might break something."
