"Her hair." Rapunzel whispered. "It's blonde, just like mine was."
Eugene leaned over the crib and gazed at the tiny girl, merely a few days old.
"She looks just like her mother. She has your eyes." He put his arm around Rapunzel's shoulder.
"Yes, but what are we going to do?" Rapunzel demanded. "If her hair has the same magical power, it could be a blessing, as well as a curse. People everywhere will want some of it. She might be in danger."
"But then again, her hair could be used for the benefit of the kingdom."
Rapunzel was silent. She reached a hand in, and traced the face of the sleeping baby. Her golden hair was already shoulder-length. Rapunzel had sung to her, and it had glowed.
Noticing Rapunzel's troubled face, Eugene leaned over into the crib and lifted their daughter into his arms. She was perfect in every way. She was a priceless treasure. Aurora Penelope Fitzherbert.
"What are we going to do, Eugene?" Rapunzel asked again. But this time, she wasn't asking for an answer, merely stating it. They stood motionless for what seemed like eternity, gazing at their princess. She had inherited her mother's magic hair. Rapunzel had wanted to cut it, but Eugene had asked her to wait.
"Her hair will continue grow and grow until it will be as long as mine was." Rapunzel continued. "And if we cut it, it will turn brown and stay the same length forever."
"Only her tears will retain their magic."
Rapunzel looked up into Eugene's face. "What are you thinking?"
Meeting her gaze, he said, "Maybe we should wait. Until she's old enough to make the choice for herself."
"When would that be?"
"Same as you: when she turns eighteen."
She bit her lip. "That's seems an awful long time to wait. And I didn't even have a choice."
"But she will."
Rapunzel looked back down at Aurora. Then back at Eugene.
"We wait?" she asked.
"We wait," he replied.
"For now at least."
Did they make the right decision? Please tell me what you think!
