The Doctor wipes away the tears that welled up in his eyes. Rory was practically holding up Amy. They were both sobbing, the remnants of Melody's birthday party still around them. The Doctor had just met River for the First Time.

And the Doctor had just told Rory and Amy about the very Last Time She met Him.

"You could have saved her!" Amy screamed at him.

"I tried! I really did try!" He said. Another tear fell from his eyes but he didn't bother catching this one. Or the next one.

"You should have tried harder!" Rory shouted.

"I couldn't! There was no-" The Doctor was sobbing now. "If there was a way to save her, I would have. I wanted to. But I couldn't. She'd have stopped me. She- she did stop me. I'm sorry." He let himself cry, after so long not letting himself cry for the everybody he could not save.

"There's always a way!" Amy screamed. "I learned that from you, you know. There. Is always. A way."

"Not all the time, Amelia. I'm sorry. But not this time." The Doctor found it hard to speak through the tears.

"My name is Amy, and I want you to get out." Amy let go of Rory and advanced threateningly towards the Doctor. "Get out of here! Leave, now! Get, Out!" Amy screamed at the Doctor.

So he did. He ran. He ran to the Tardis and flew away. Amy and Rory sat, crying, in their living room, alone.

They never saw the Doctor again. And they never really wanted to after that.

And who can blame them? For the Doctor had just told them that he'd seen their child die, while he sat there helplessly, billions of light years from home and thousands of years in the future. And she had only just turned five.
