(A/N: I have no idea where this story came from. And yes, this is a Twilight fic even though I haven't posted one of those in months. I apologize for that—I just ran out of ideas. Enjoy!)
Emotion
In the beginning of all of this, Marcus felt no connection to Leah. He was simply doing what Aro told him to do.
Aro wanted Leah to join the Volturi, to be their guard dog. But Aro knew the only way Leah would ever join them was if they gave her something she wanted: love.
Aro could have chosen one of the vampires in the Volturi's guard, but he chose Marcus instead. Marcus didn't really care. He hadn't cared about anything for a long, long time. Aro had promised that Marcus would like her, but they both knew that it wasn't going to make him more excited about it.
So, at first, Marcus was just acting. A smile at Leah, a joke, some flowers sent to her house. But none of it was real.
Yet.
When Marcus started talking to Leah, really talking to her, he found her intriguing. Leah would often laugh quietly and say she didn't know why she was telling all of this to a leech like him, but Marcus would just smile and urge her to continue talking.
And then, Marcus discovered something he hadn't felt in centuries: emotions. Suddenly, he felt like singing when he was with Leah, and he wanted to stop existing when he was away from her. It was a nice change from the monotonous centuries that had come before Leah.
Aro was extremely pleased with how Leah seemed to be drawn towards Marcus, just as he was drawn towards her. It was the perfect way to get the Volturi their guard dog.
Marcus didn't want Leah to be their guard dog. If something happened to her…he didn't think he would make it through losing another person he loved. But Marcus didn't even want to think about that. He just wanted to think about how glad he was that he had Leah now.
On one perfect, beautiful night with Leah, Marcus took her warm face in his icy hands, and whispered, "Leah, I haven't said this in so long, but…you make me happy."
