A Magical Day

Whoever said pregnancy was the most wonderful thing in the world was seriously deluded. Kate Beckett was a week overdue and everyone knew about it. The doctors were going to induce if she didn't go into labour within the next day. Normally nothing fazed the NYPD Detective, but this, this was something else entirely. She felt like a beached whale. Her ankles were swollen and her stomach protruded so far she couldn't even see said ankles. She only knew from the extreme discomfort of standing too long. Another thing was that, due to her usually lean size, the extra weight she was carrying wreaked havoc on her back. She thought she could die, and this day was worse than ever.

Her husband, Richard Castle, was an absolute God-send throughout her whole pregnancy; organising trips to the spa so she could still be pampered and massaged. Of course he still got on her nerves and was forced to spend quite a number of nights on the couch.

So after a week of extra baking, Kate had had enough. She wanted this baby out of her…yesterday!

This particular day was hers and Rick's first wedding anniversary, and she still didn't know what to get him. Standing in the living room of their loft, she felt something wet run down her legs. Looking over her belly and down at the carpet, she could see a large pool of liquid at her feet. So that would explain the more constant back pain she had been experiencing most of the last night and early morning. For some reason, Kate couldn't fathom why her baby picked this day of all days to want to be born. Well, there was her anniversary present for Rick.

Rick…she had to call him. He and Alexis, who was home for the summer, had gone out to breakfast and had yet to return. Finding her phone and calling her husband to tell him it was "time", she headed up the stairs to retrieve her overnight bag from their bedroom. Pain gripping her as she settled on their bed to wait on Rick and Alexis.

10 hours, 23 minutes; three cups of ice chips, one of which were thrown at Rick; 2 broken proximal phalanges and enough curses to make a sailor blush, a happy healthy 8 pound 6 ounce baby boy was born. Jacob James Castle; JJ to his father and Jake to his mother.

"Happy anniversary, Rick," Kate smiled as she kissed her husband lightly, before turning back to the tiny bundle of blue blankets in her arms.

Every year on this day something magical always happens. So far it has been the day Kate and Rick had met, five years later they got married and the year after that they had their own bundle of joy.

"I got you something, Kate." Rick reached into his bag and pulled out what looked like his new manuscript of his new book "Heat Train". Opening it, Kate read what he had written in the dedication and shed a few silent tears.

"Thank you. And I love you."

'FOR KATE,

Thank you for making June 2nd the best days of my life'
