"You would do that!" Diane yelled. "You would kill yourself, for her!"
"Yes." he said with a shaky voice.
"Thomas Merton." Maeve whispered.
"Who's Thomas Merton?!" Diane yelled. "Who is he?!"
"He knows." Maeve said, staring into Spencer's eyes. "He's the one thing you can never take from us."
"No." Diane muttered bitterly, raising the gun to her head.
"WAIT!" Spencer screamed.
Gunshot rang through his ears. Only it wasn't Diane's gun.
Maeve stood in shock, watching as Diane's dead body fell to the ground in a pool of blood.
Spencer ran forward and grabbed her in a tight embrace. He quickly realized she was probably in pain and let her go. "Maeve, are you okay?" That's a stupid question, he quickly thought to himself.
"I-is she dead?" Maeve asked quietly.
"Yes. She's gone." he replied.
Maeve looked down at Diane's body. It was finally over. No more hiding. No more fear. It was done. "I want to go home." she said.
"About that." Spencer said, biting his lip. "Your loft is still an active crime scene. You're welcome to stay with me. Or I can take you to your parents house. Or wherever you want to go."
"Your place." she said. "Just can we please get out of here?"
He nodded and helped her out. As they arrived at his apartment, Maeve turned to him. "Spencer, can I use your phone? I need to call my mom."
"Of course." he said, handing her the phone. "I'll be inside "
"Maeve?" her mother answered the phone frantically.
"Yeah mom, it's me." Maeve replied.
"Are you staying at the loft tonight? You really shouldn't be there alone. I can come keep you company, if you want. No wait, you shouldn't be there at all after what happened. You can come stay with me and your father for as long as you want-"
Maeve cut her off. "Mom, its fine. I'm staying with Spencer tonight."
"Are you sure?" Mary replied.
"Yes. I'll come see you tomorrow, I promise." Maeve said.
"OK, see you then..." her mother said.
"Bye. I love you." Maeve said before hanging up the phone. She headed in to his apartment and out of habit, she looked over both shoulders before walking in.
"Hey. I left some clothes in the bathroom for you. They might be a little big." Spencer said, looking up from his book.
"Okay." Maeve said, walking into the bathroom. She changed into the baggy T-shirt and sweatpants he had laid out for her. "We need to go to the loft tomorrow, get some of my clothes." she laughed, as the sweatpants were way too long.
Spencer chuckled, "Okay. Wanna order a pizza?" he asked. She nodded and sat down next to him. He called the pizza place as Maeve started flipping through channels. About 20 minutes later the pizza arrived. Maeve ate 3 pieces before falling asleep on Spencer's chest.
And for the first time in a long time, he was actually happy.
