This free verse poem was inspired by the song "Wicked Game" by Chris Isaak. It was written in response to Masquerade Doll's 'Age is but a Number' challenge and the Hogwarts Online prompt for January 26th. As always, credit to Mew & Mor for the pairing.

OoOoO

O

Three rounds.

Two players.

One goal.

(To win)

O

It is a wicked game he plays,

Toying with her, D a p h n e.

He is much too old for it, really,

And certainly too wise to

Fall

for

her,

to

Lose to her.

If you could call love a

- loss.

(And he does.)

O

It is a wicked game she plays,

Bewitching him, Lucius.

Theirs is no fairytale romance.

He is a king who has l o n g since

-Lost- his throne.

And she is no princess,

Never mind his queen.

O

With her, he is himself...

Now and then.

Because her clear blue eyes

Never saw what he was,

(Monster. Powerful. Predator. Master.)

And do not compare the

IShadowsI to the s u n l i g h t;

When she laughs,

He almost stops, too.

O

With him, she cannot tell

If she is winning or losing

The(ir) game of

Longing glances &

L i n g e r i n g touches.

One kiss, and she forgets

(Death, screams, pain, war...)

To keep score,

Or even that it is a battle.

O

A diversion.

That simple, or is should be;

His life is littered with 'should be',

And she is the only one he doesn't regret.

How could he?

Daphne is soft beside him,

So gentle that he doesn't notice

Her fingers \cradling/ his heart.

She found it.

Something from nothing,

That's a +profit+ he cannot argue with;

The sweetest victory.

O

A diversion,

An escape (from nothing).

Her silver spoon is [gone],

Along with the glory of green,

The splendour of Slytherin.

Her age p.a.s.s.e.d before it even began.

Yet he holds on to her

=tightly=

He gives her a place by his side.

It is her victory,

(I love you)

Even if he wouldn't admit it.

O

A draw.

Loss hal-ved,

(His & Hers)

Victory d o u b l e d.

(Theirs)

O

OoOoO
