Classes were going as well as they could for a vampire who seemed to be pulled into one disaster after another. She had thought that things might settle down after she left Mystic Falls, the apparent hotspot for supernatural drama, but so far that wasn't the case. Her new human roommate was dead – apparently thrown from the window of a frat house party by another vampire – and there was nothing she could do about it except compel the administration not to put another student in with her and Elena. When her phone rang, she almost didn't answer. It couldn't mean anything good if Klaus wanted to talk to her, especially not after the woods and his promise to stay away while she figured things out.
"What do you want Klaus?"
"Hello, love," She could practically hear his smirk over the phone. "Trouble at school?"
Her eyes bulged at his question, "Are you having me followed?! That is not ok! I was very specific when I told you what I wanted Klaus!"
"Well love, you can hardly expect me to just ignore you for the next decade. I only get a call if there's something in your life that could be dangerous," he calmly explained.
Caroline took a few deep breaths while she paced back and forth in front of the park bench she had been sitting on. Shouting at him wouldn't change his stalkerish tendencies and she couldn't just run away. She had a life here! Not to mention he would just track her down. Sitting back down she tried to be rational, "Klaus, I'm a vampire. Silas is dead and you're not terrorizing my town at the moment, so what could I possibly need protection from?"
There was silence on the other end of the line. Caroline imagined him looking up at the ceiling and trying very hard not to lose his temper. Really, it was his fault – he shouldn't have his minions stalking her! And for calling in the first place, couldn't his lackey just report back that she was safe and sound? There was no reason this conversation needed to happen. She let out a long sigh and stretched her legs out.
"I need to know you're safe. I'd take a bullet for you, you know that. By extension, my vampires would take a bullet for you if they know what's good for them," he growled.
"Enough! First of all, you're immortal and I'm going to kill you if you keep saying that. Second, your vampire minions shouldn't have to do that, we've never even met!" She panted for a moment after her outburst, then more calmly, "Klaus, I'm safe here. I'm normal here and that's what I want right now is to be normal and go to school with my friends. You told me you'd wait, however long it takes, and that's what I need from you."
Klaus sighed deeply into the phone and she could hear a rustle when he ran his hand through his blond curls. They sat together in silence until finally he murmured, "I'll talk to you soon, Caroline."
As she tucked her phone back into her bag and got ready to meet Elena for a study date it hit her that he'd be calling again. Thunk, her hand hit her forehead as she groaned about inconvenient, possessive hybrids while she walked down the sidewalk.
