She closes her eyes, exhales slowly as she meditates. The waves approach and recede with a steady rhythm that her own breaths have taken on. Water droplets kiss her cheeks and shoulders coldly and it is tranquil and lonely there.
Footsteps approach quietly behind her. "Terra," she murmurs, and does not turn.
"Hey," rustling as he seats himself behind her. "There's an awful lot of sand here."
Her eyes open slowly and turn to him, and she smiles. "It's a beach."
"Still," he pauses, deep blue eyes looking out at the sea. "How long have you been sitting here?"
"I've lost track of time. Hard to keep it when you're never hungry."
And the ghost beside her smiles, and for a moment it's like nothing has changed. "I wonder if there are fish."
"No," she replies and knows it even though she has never touched the waters, never once gone further than the edge of the sands where the waves just barely touched the toes of her boots. "There's nothing else here."
"Then what am I?"
She pauses, and her breathing does not match the waves anymore. "Terra," she whispers, reaching over to touch him. As her fingers brush his sleeve he crumbles, into dust and light and a brief moment of warmth, before mixing in with the white sands. She holds her hand there a moment before letting it drop into the sand, and it has already turned cool.
She closes her eyes. "I'll save you, Terra," she whispers to the sands, whispers to the sea. "I swear it."
Cold mists brush against her lips like a promise and the waves recede again.
