My third Lain fic. The more I try to write Lain fics, the
more confused I've become. @__@

"What's your name?"
The young girl shiften in her seat. She bowed her head down,
playing with her shirt sleeves.
"... Lain."
"Lain," the man smiled, "Don't be anxious. Just try
to relax, okay?"
"Can't..."
"Oh? Why?" he asked.
She looked steadily at him, the deep pupils widening
slightly, "I don't belong here."
"Where do you belong, then?"
After a long pause, she replied, "On the Wired..."
"Why are you here now?"
"I don't know...," Lain whispered, "I am... needed."
"By whom?"
No answer. She looked confused and diverted her gaze.
"Okay, we'll leave it at that. What is the Wired?"
"It is a world," she shifted in her chair again,
"but it is not the Real World. Lots of the Real World's
people are on the Wired too, though. But they often wear
different masks and forms..."
"What do you do on the Wired?"
"... live. Talk. All the stuffs."
"Is it fun there?"
Suddenly she looked up sharply at him. A mocking glint crossed
her deep eyes. The man coughed and wrote something on his book.
Lain gave him a cool stare.
"You should know," she finally said, "I've seen
you on the Wired too."
"What do you mean?"
"You're also a citizen of the Wired. Although you've
changed your masks numerous times, I still know. You can't
fool me."
"Who are you?" he asked with a sligh shiver in his
voice.
"I am Lain."
He swallowed, "You know all which happened both on the
Real World and the Wired?"
"Yes."
"Are you telling me the truth?"
She smiled coldly, "You're a Knight. Or rather, you
were a Knight. Surely you must know who Lain is."
"You are /real/!" he whispered in awe.
"I am and I am not. I exist only on the Wired. The I
you see before you now is just a part of the real I."
"I... then... what will you do to me?"
Her face softened, "I am needed here. /You/ need me.
You want to believe. So I am here. Now that you've believed,
I will return to the Wired."
She stood up from her chair and smiled. A different smile with
the one she wore earlier. A smile full of compassion.
"Farewell. If you need me, just call on the Wired.
I will hear you. And to the ones who believe, I shall come."
The man started to tremble violently, "L... Lain..."
"We are connected," she put her right hand on his
chest, her left one on her own, "I will feel what you go
through."
She disappeared, leaving a trail of thin white fog in the
room. The man stood behind his desk.
"We are connected..."
