It was that time of year again, the night of the Jellicle Ball where one cat would be chosen to go to the Heaviside Layer to be reborn. The Jellicle Cats had gathered and different cats had sung of themselves in the hopes of being chosen to be reborn.
Twins that could almost rival Mungojerrie and Rumpleteazer sung of ruining their human's clean laundry, leading young kittens astray and having all their deeds blamed on their human's Pollicle puppy, white and black tom with a mauled appearance, along with some help from a white and grey tabby patterned Maine Coon kitten and a fluffy black kitten, told of his horrible past and how he had finally found somewhere he was safe and loved and Gus sung again of how he once was a great actor and his memories of the theatre.
It came time for the Heaviside Layer Cat to be announced and the Jellicles sung as he was sent on his journey by Old Deutronomy. Gus stepped from the Tire and shakily ascended the Stairs to the Heaviside Layer.
Mouse-Trap watched with a smile as he watched Gus be sent up. Nuala and Thirteen clung to his legs and both kittens seemed sad, not only to see the old theatre cat go, but that their older friend hadn't been sent. As the other Jellicles went their own way and Mouse-Trap lead the kittens back to their den, Thirteen spoke up.
"Mousie, are you upset you didn't get to go?"
Mouse-Trap simply grinned and didn't say a word. Even if he had had a rough life, he wouldn't give up what he had now for anything, including being sent to the Heaviside Layer.
AN: When I was a child I had always wanted Gus to be sent to be reborn, even if I did know why it was Grizabella, so I decided to write a small drabble of him being sent up the next year. After a suggestion by my girlfriend, I added mentions of dear little babies, along with the end bit between Mouse-Trap and the kittens.
The mentioned cats aren't really OC's, they're mine and my girlfriend's pets, our Maine Coon kitten Nuala, our black kitten Thirteen, twin white, grey and black cats called Mischief and Trouble and my cuddle-baby Mouse-Trap, who was a rescue cat.
