A bit of a situation
Monday morning
JAG Head Quarters
Admiral's office
"Sir, Commander Rabb on line four, Sir."
"Put him through."
A moment later Admiral Chegwidden was talking to his subordinate.
"Commander, what can I do for you?"
"Sir, we have a … erm … a bit of …"
"A bit of a situation?"
"Yes, Sir."
You almost could hear Chegwidden smile.
"Let me guess. You spent the night in the Colonel's bed."
Harm's jaw dropped. Did he hear right; did his CO really assume he had spent the night with Mac?
"You still there?" he heard Chegwidden ask.
"Y…yes, Sir," Harm stammered.
"Well, did you spend the night in the Colonel's bed? Otherwise I would not only have lost a considerable bet, but would also be very disappointed in you."
"Sir?" Harm still couldn't believe his ears.
"Right. You didn't think I'd send a senior officer all the way to Norfolk just to deliver some paperwork, do you? I know it was Mac's birthday yesterday and it's about time the two of you got your heads out of your sixes and made the next step, isn't it."
"Yes, Sir." Slowly it dawned to Harm his CO had set them up. Chegwidden gave him a moment and then came to the point. His next point, that is.
"Well, what happened then?"
"My room was broken in and ransacked, Sir."
Now the Admiral was on high alert.
"Don't tell me the papers are stolen!"
"No Sir," Harm sounded a bit hurt and offended. "I delivered them straight ahead to Admiral Montgomery. This afternoon I have to report to him for an answer, Sir."
A mighty sigh sounded at the other end of the line.
"Anything missing?"
"Not that I'm aware off, Sir. I … I wasn't in. I was with the Colonel." Unseen by his CO Harm blushed.
"Any idea what time the burglary took place?"
"Not yet, Sir. NCIS is watching the security camera tapes and is searching for eyewitnesses."
"Right. One last question. Did I win my bet?"
Once again Harm went beet red.
"Yes, you did, Sir," he had to admit.
"Right. Don't worry about fraternisation rules, that's covered already. As long as you behave professionally at work, that is. Well, give the Colonel my belated birthday wishes and I expect you back in the office later this afternoon or tomorrow morning."
"Aye aye, Sir." Despite his CO being on the other end of a phone line Harm came to attention.
After putting the phone down, Harm stood motionless, his face still holding an expression of utter shock and confusion. Mac appeared from out of the bathroom. She saw him stand and walked over to wrap her arms around his waist.
"What's wrong?"
He looked down on her and shook his head, still in disbelief.
"He set us up. That sly old fox! He set us up!" Call terminated, Chegwidden leant back in his chair and allowed himself a content chuckle. About time, indeed. Let's see … that won bet would pay for a nice dinner with that nice doctor … what was her name again … Sydney Walden. He would call her this evening.
Then he reached for the phone again.
"Tiner, give me NCIS. We seem to have a bit of a situation in Norfolk."
The end
