It was just another normal day for Donna. She was heading back to work after a quick lunch break and trying to juggle carrying her purse, paperwork, and talking on the phone to a friend. As she was chatting away to the friend and walking down the sidewalk, a tall, skinny man came dashing up from behind her. He bumped into her as he flew past, which made her lose grip of all that she was carrying. Her paperwork flew everywhere and her phone crashed to the concrete.
"What the bloody hell?" Donna yelled. She bent down to pick up her papers when she noticed a young red head kneel down beside her.
"Sorry about that. He's kinda in a rush," said the red head as she helped Donna with her papers.
"Well he certainly needs to watch where he is going. Idiot of a man!" Donna replied. After picking up all the papers they stood up and the red head gave a little smile.
"Amy, we have to go! Now!" called another man who came and grabbed her by the hand. Amy waved as they both dashed after the tall, skinny guy. All Donna could do was shake her head at how crazy some people can be. Up ahead, Amy and the other man dashed down an alley and into the Police Box.
"Doctor! What was that about?" asked Amy as she stepped up near the Doctor as he was fiddling with the Tardis' controls.
"What?" he answered rather awkwardly as he didn't want to make eye contact.
"You're hiding something aren't you?" she asked once she noticed how fidgety he was becoming.
"Who me? Never," he answered trying to get out of this situation.
"Doctor! Please!" Amy retorted back and in that moment the Doctor paused what he was doing and just seemed to be in a blank stare at his controls. Memories flooded back to him of that night. That night where his best friend was no longer.
"Don't say that word," the Doctor said sternly.
"What is wrong with you? First we were running cause you said we were in the wrong place, then you bump into that woman and don't even care about it, and now you are hiding things from us!" Amy yelled back in anger and frustration.
All the Doctor could do was stand there. He felt numb. Amy came closer to him and saw the glistening in his eyes. She noticed a tear flow down his cheek.
"Doctor?" Amy asked as she was now concerned that she had upset him.
The Doctor tilted his head, looked at her and asked, "Did she seem happy?" Amy was taken aback.
"Did that woman seem happy?" he asked again.
"Um I guess so. Why? What does she have to do with you?" Amy asked in complete confusion.
"I knew her once. She was my best friend," answered the Doctor as he wiped his face and tried to compose himself.
The other man stepped forward and asked, "You knew her? Well then why didn't you say anything to her?"
The Doctor flopped into his chair and replied, "I can't speak to her, Rory. That's why I ran. Once I knew where we were, I knew I had to leave. I tried not to even bump into her. I can't be seen by her. I can't talk to her. She can't have any memory of me."
Rory stood near Amy as he asked, "Well why?"
"It's complicated," the Doctor explained, "But you said she seemed happy though Amy?" he asked as he looked up at her.
"Uh yeah she was chatting away on the phone before you bumped into her," answered Amy.
"Good 'ole Donna," the Doctor said as he smiled.
He knew she was fine now and that's all he could ask for. Even though this encounter was never meant to happen, he was glad it did in a sense. Now he knew that she was still the same Donna he had known before. The most important woman in all of creation.
