Prologue

"Perhaps there could be no joy on this planet without an equal weight of pain to balance it out on some unknown scale." ― Stephenie Meyer, The Host

"Right. I got an hour and 10 minutes to get this shit done." Dana-Kira, Trying To Kick-Start The Writing Of This Prologue

They told me stories when I was younger. Each of these stories had some sort of morale, such as "Beware of false knowledge, as it is more dangerous than ignorance," or " We must live together as brothers, or perish together as fools."

They never, ever, gave enough warning for what was coming.

" Having children makes you no more of a parent, than having a piano makes you a pianist."

Never before, had the Nightingales sung louder. Sweeter. Or the rythymic beating of the drums more harmonious to one's ears.

I stared at the smooth surface of the egg, watching intently as the tiny crack fractured itself by tenfold. A minute, three-fingered, forest green hand pushed through the remains of the egg, and a small, round head followed. Sapphires eyes glanced up to me through heavy eyelids.

"Mari," I whispered.

She took his tiny body in her hands, and cradled him to her chest, much too my suprise, but the little one accepted the gesture without protest, resting his head against her plastron. I studied the pattern and colour of his shell, a tiny and beautiful thing, only just bigger than her palm.

"Norio, the other is coming."

Tearing my gaze away from my eldest, coming to rest on the second egg; rolling back and forth on the tatami mat. Instead of a hand, however, a tiny foot appeared through the fractured surface, followed by a small body rolling out onto the mat. Mari still held the blue-eyed child, so I gently scooped up the tiny body of the second, and cradled him to my chest.

He opened his eyes, somewhat reluctantly, and I was met with a fierce emerald, flecked with gold, much like my own. Those eyes slowly slid from mine, and blinked around the room, coming to rest on the woven belt running across my plastron. His hand reached for it, and traced gently against the tightly plaited strands with his tiny fingers.

"Norio," Mari sighed. "They are both perfect."

I nodded, not taking my eyes off the child resting his head on my chest. "Hai, my love. They are."

"They will make strong future leaders for the clan."

My reply was on the tip of my toungue, but our precious moment wad politely interrupted.

"Lord Norio, Soke would like to have a word with you. And, congratulations on your sucessful hatchlings."

I sighed. "Thank you, Ryuu. I will see Soke."

They never told me that great joy, would come with so much sorrow.

Yours Sincerely, and see you, hopefully in the next chapter,
