Pumpkins

This fanfic was inspired by a Fruit Challenge, and contrary to many beliefs, a pumpkin is a fruit, it has seeds.

So enjoy!

It was October 31st, a holiday called Halloween in the Muggle world. Harry and Hermione had visited the Burrow to celebrate with the Weasley family. They were all on the porch, carving out their own pumpkins. Ron and Hermione were a little ways off from the rest of the family, preferring to be somewhat alone.

Hermione was carefully carving what was supposed to be a cat onto her pumpkin, which ended up looking like a drowned rat. Ron's pumpkin had the typical triangle eyes and mouth. Done and bored, Ron attempted to start a conversation with Hermione.

"Did you know pumpkins are fruit?"

"No, they aren't!" Hermione looked up from her meticulous carving. "Are they really?"

"Yeah, they are." Ron grinned, pleased that he knew something that Hermione didn't. "Did you know that the word pumpkin originates from 'pepon' which is Greek for 'large melon'?"

"Yes, I did know that." Hermione turned to her carving again.

Ron tried again. "Oh… did you know that the oldest pumpkin melon seeds were found in…"

"Mexico, yeah, I know," Hermione interrupted.

"Do you know that pumpkins…"

"Are monoecious, which means that they have both male and female flowers? I knew that too." Hermione gave Ron an irritated glance. "Are you questioning my intelligence?"

Ignoring Hermione's question, Ron gave it one last shot. "Did…"

"I know that orange, one of the colors of Halloween, which comes from the color of jack-o-lanterns, symbolizes strength and endurance? Yeah, I think I do." Hermione grinned at Ron and continued carving her pumpkin.

A short and sweet fanfic.
