Author's Note:
This is a moment in time –another one-shot fanfiction orphan rescued from my hard drive as I continue to get closer to updating 'Between the Lines'
Where did I get inspiration you ask? Well, like all my inspiration – it comes right out of the tv series itself (and all related 'canon' activity).
In this case, a casting call back in 2008.
You heard me right!
"Driver" ... 30s, open ethnicity. Driving Serena to Brown. One scene, one line.
Unlike my other three fanfictions, I can't logistically say 'this could have happened'. Thus, this is non-concurrent, it references Between the Lines, but goes off in a different direction.
Enjoy!
Wake Me Up When September Ends
Serena stared through the tinted glass window as her limousine sped her towards Providence.
"Excited for college miss?" The driver asked.
"…a little." She replied.
But, really, only a little. Four more years of school seemed daunting. An old song full of nostalgia came on the radio, speeding through her mind.
Summer has come to pass, the innocent can never last, wake me up, when September ends…
Her search for her father in Santorini all those years ago had been a whim, a distraction brought about from a conversation she had had with her mother long ago.
"You're just like your father, and I don't mean that in a good way!" Lily had exclaimed her freshman year, after Georgina and her had decided to fly to Monte Carlo, first class on her mother's credit card. The money wasn't so much the issue as their missing a week of school was.
"Whether it was racing his motorcycle up and down the streets of London, or checking up on his restaurants in Santorini, he never gave notice, just left without a word." Lily continued.
Well, there is one difference. Serena mused. I came back.
And that was all Serena had heard on the subject. The summer before her Junior year, when she had found herself in Santorini, she had been in a 'What the Hell' mood (thus, the Carter Baizen sized error in judgment). Remembering her mother's words, she began taking a vested interest in the places she ate her meals, asking the waiters about the owners, current management, talking up barmen where she might before have only flirted.
And when that error-in-judgment, Carter Baizen, found her again, and asked her what she had been up to, she told him the truth. After the fiasco with the Greek Police she had never expected to hear from him again, much less follow up on her whim.
He hadn't followed up for another year, anyway.
Earlier in the summer they flew to Fiji on the next flight available, but still arrived too late – he had already left the apartment that he had been staying at. The private detective that was following him had mentioned a woman he had eating dinner with, and though Carter and her had found the said woman, she was less than willing to talk – all she said was that he would be at meetings in Munich all the following week.
So, they had flown to Munich… and with the help of said private detective, they traced him to Bern, and to Amsterdam, and then, their summer already half over, they gave up. He was traveling under an assumed name, and with the tourist season already in full swing, there were simply too many forty-something nondescript blonde-haired bachelors to keep track of…
Still, she had a photo.
It had been, what? Five years since she had seen him last? Did she really want to wait another for years?
She smiled. Maybe it was time for a change again…
Hope you enjoyed! Please be sure to check out my other fan fictions about Serena!
