It's one of those rare times that his mom brings him to work because there's no one available to watch over him. He keeps quiet and behaves. He doesn't wanna cause trouble for his mom.
She works so hard.
He watches her run back and forth as she helps people around the hospital. He's sitting at her desk in the nurse's station and he can't help but fidget. He's young and has all this energy to burn but there's nothing to do and he's kind of bored.
He plays a game with himself.
He closes his eyes and tries to guess what noises and sounds are coming from what. There's so many faint sounds running together on the hospital floor. There's beeps and phones ringing and wheels turning. It's infrequent but the beeping is probably the most consistent. Steady beeping was a good thing.
"Hey sweetie, you look bored, do you want to follow me for a little bit? Say hi to people?"
Scott opens his eyes and smiles. "Okay!"
He quickly hops up from his seat and walks around before standing beside his mom.
"Great. I'm sure some people would just love to see you." She starts walking in an easy pace, much different from the brisk one that she had when work began.
Scott follows her with no trouble as he looks around the halls, sometimes seeing patients as they walk by rooms. Most occupants look really sick and pale. Young Scott feels a pang of sadness. "Is everybody gonna get better, mommy?"
Melissa smiles weakly, her lips close together and not showing any teeth.
"We're going to try to help them feel as good as they can. Some will get better and some won't."
"Oh."
They stop in a few rooms as his mom checks vitals and charts all while chatting with patients. He says hi to them too but he's a bit shy. It's too weird to make eye-contact with a lot of the sick people. Scott wishes he was less shy but he can't help it.
His mother though is very friendly. She jokes with them and asks about their day or about relatives. This helps he thinks. She knows these people and talking to them like it's normal and it's okay it must be nice. Scott wants to do that too. He wants to be like his mom that way he can help people.
They're walking back to the nurse's station when Scott takes an opportunity to take hold of Melissa's free hand. She looks at him and smiles, this time it reaches her eyes.
"I think some of the older ladies liked you."
Scott wrinkled his nose then held her hand tighter. "Gross."
That earned a short laugh. "Oh?"
"Yeah."
"Well I think it was still nice. Thanks for helping me."
He nods smiling a bit.
"How about we head for the cafeteria and get us a snack?"
"Okay!"
Being like his mom would be really cool.
A/N:
Just got me thinking of how Melissa is a nurse and Scott is doctor's assistant of sorts. I'm pretty sure being around his mom got him interested in vet work or something. Maybe isn't quite cut out for sick people but there are animals to help. Idk just thinking.
