"Sam, I know you've denied yourself the experience because you think it must inevitably end in pain. It's time to let go of the things that prevent you from finding happiness. You deserve to love someone and be loved in return."
Even though it had been over a year since she had been trapped on the Prometheus, her father's words were still firmly etched in her memory. At the time, she had mistaken her father's meaning; that's why she started dating Pete. Her father told her that she deserved to be loved. It was something she found hard to believe. With her career at the SGC, Sam knew that any relationship would be unfair to the other person, not only due to the strict level of confidentiality she had to withhold, but also because every time she walked through the Stargate, she took a risk. She could be gone for days at a time and her partner would never be allowed to know where she was, or the fact that she could be in severe danger. Luckily, Pete knowing about the programme had made it a little easier, especially in introducing him to her father. But there was always something missing with Pete. At first Sam didn't understand why. She did love Pete; he was kind, caring and adored her completely. On the Prometheus when Sam spoke to her conscience in the form of Jacob Carter, she always believed he was trying to tell her to let go of the feelings that only made her miserable and to find someone who could make her happy. She believed that to be Pete. Wanted it to be Pete. But she came to realise her father wasn't talking about finding someone else.
Another memory flicked through Sam's mind. It was a recent memory. She could still feel her father's warm touch as he said his last words. She remembered that feeling of hollowness as he told her that he was soon going to die. But what came to her attention most were his cryptic words, again voicing his concern for her happiness. "Don't let rules stand in your way… You can still have everything you want." Until this point she had only suspected that the words of her conscience on the Prometheus might not have referred to Pete. However now, as she remembered her father's eyes burning into hers as he lay on the hospital bed, she finally realised what her father really meant, confirming those suspicions. It wasn't Pete that could make her happy and her father knew it. Janet had known it too. So did Teal'c and Daniel.
A tear rolled down her cheek as she remembered her father. She had told Jack that she was fine and she was pretty much, but the events of the week had finally taken their toll and she needed to let the emotion out. She missed Jacob, but remembering him made her more happy than sad. Thanks to the Tok'ra she had been able to find a new man in him. Another tear ran down her cheek and fell onto her cardigan. But with it she smiled, thinking of her father and realising that he was right. She was grateful to him for pointing out what she had tried to ignore for so long. It made her love him even more. He wanted her to be happy and there was something she needed to do for not just herself but for her father too. She owed it to him.
