Long legs shone in the bright moonlight as they stepped delicately out across the sand towards the gentle surf. The slim body lowered itself gently onto the cool grains glowing white across the beach. Staring out into the faint horizon she shivered. The wind swept around her figure, the shoulder-length brown hair whipping about her face. The sun-dress she had thrown on unthinkingly as she flew from her home did little to warm the pale skin but she could not bring herself to care.
Wisps of the nightmare that had woken her screaming and crying flew about her head in little threads of hurt and agony. Normally he would be there, always ready to lend a cold, smooth shoulder for her to cry on, muttering sweet nothings in her ear till nothing remained but the faint echo of a memory and her eyes would slide shut of their own volition, sending her back into the ethereal realm of peaceful sleep. Tonight though, he was out, hunting with his brothers leaving her alone in her room, wide-awake and panting, the glowing green light of her alarm clock informing her that it was two am.
Sighing softly she looked up towards the sky, always so clear out this way, thousands upon thousands of small pinpricks of light, the full moon showing the outline of the clouds that marred the otherwise perfect view. The clouds had their own beauty though, dark and brooding as they seemed to suck the light out of the sky. Yes, it was a dark beauty but a beauty none the less.
A change in the way the wind was moving made her turn slowly to look behind her. The soft smile on her face belied the pain still shining in her eyes and he came and sat gracefully beside her.
"I thought you might be here."
"Mm," She sighed softly.
"I'm sorry I wasn't there."
"Not your fault." Glancing up into his amber eyes she felt some of the pain recede.
"Do you want to talk about it?"
"Not really."
"Could you tell me anyway?" He asked softly, his voice smooth and coaxing. "Please?"
They sat for a moment in silence before she started her voice whisper soft.
"It was so dark. It was dark and I couldn't find you, I was running and running and I still couldn't find you. Then all of a sudden you were there in a clearing but the Volturi had you and then Jake was there and he was behind me just grinning and I kept begging them to let you go and you were just staring at me and I was sobbing and they just smiled. Nobody was speaking just me and I could see into your eyes, it was like I was suffocating and then I woke up."
He slid even closer to her, wrapping his arms around her shaking frame and pressing a kiss into the top her head. One hand rubbed absentmindedly along her back in a soothing rhythm as the other pulled her into his chest.
The wind whistled about the silent couple on the beach but neither one moved. Gradually, the sun rose over the horizon bathing their frozen silhouette with streams of rosy light. One figure moved slowly, standing over the other as he lifted her gently into his arms. Placing her tenderly into the seat of the car he smiled softly at her sleeping form. Climbing in the other side of the car Edward started up the long cold engine and started for home.
"Sweet dreams, my Bella."
