Shaping Metal
by Kaosrock
Elemental Keith Grady took a deep breath and closed his eyes, settling into a light meditative state as he searched within himself for that inner peace. Laid in front of him were three metal rods, waiting to be shaped according to his will.
This light release of his elemental powers was his favorite exercise. It provided peace of mind and relaxation and was fairly easy to do. Plus, it gave him nice end results. Grady inwardly smiled at the thought of the metal figurines he'd created the others, each one complementing its owner's elemental powers.
A raging fire for Ray. The gentle crest of a wave for Michael. The swift, fierce breeze circling a mountaintop for Serena.
Despite their complexity, he was rather proud to say that it had been child's play for him. Today, however, his center eluded him, stubbornly staying just out of reach of his grasping mind. No matter how he tried, he couldn't find that inner peace and without it, there was no way to call his power. Grady sighed and finally gave up.
"Stupid metal," He muttered in his thick Australian accent, eyeing the rods reproachfully.
"Having trouble, Grady?" A silky voice said mockingly.
Grady scowled. "No."
"Uh huh," Elemental of air, Serena Blue, cocked one eye disbelievingly at the cross-legged form sulkily hunched before her.
"What?"
"Nothing," Serena said airily. "You know, Grady, with that attitude, no wonder your powers are so unreliable."
Unreliable? Why the - Grady took a deep breath and glared at her. Unreliable, huh? Well, he would show _her_. Little Miss Show-off...
Seething, Grady gritted his teeth and flung out a violent burst of mental energy. Before him, the pieces of metal shifted and changed according to his turbulent mental patters, creating incomprehensible, puzzling shapes of art that were strangely appealing in their own way. Grady smiled broadly at his accomplishment. That knotted feeling that had been keeping him from his power had disappeared.
Serena knelt down and picked up one of the pieces. "It's very beautiful," she complimented sincerely, all trace of animosity gone. She smiled at Grady, then set the piece down and walked away.
Bewildered beyond belief, Grady scratched his head and stared. Then shook his head and shrugged. Women.
From his perch, Os smiled in approval as he watched the deft way Serena had distracted Grady into anger. He was fairly sure she didn't realize the significance of what she was doing nor did she realize how much power she held over the brash, headstrong metal, but the results were favorable just the same. By challenging him, Serena had given Grady something else to focus on, letting his subconscious knowledge take care of his inner dilemma.
Os smiled. Air shapes metal, indeed.
